My National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) journey commenced on April 27, 2023, marking the beginning of an unforgettable adventure in Abuja. The anticipation and excitement were palpable as I awaited my posting letter, only to discover that I was destined for Keffi Camp, Nasarawa state, as an F.C.T dislodged Corps member. While initially this was unexpected, this twist of fate proved to be a blessing in disguise.
Life at Keffi camp was a whirlwind of camaraderie. From forming bonds with fellow Corps members to engaging with inspiring military personnel, from Camp Commandant Cpt B.O James who was of a Delta Origin down to the number one Corp member of Nasarawa state, The State Coordinator, Camp Director. every moment was infused with a sense of unity and purpose. However, amidst the laughter and festivities, adversity struck when I fell ill with flu and throat infections just days into the camp for two out of the three weeks. Despite my physical setbacks, I found solace in the unwavering support of my platoon officer and comrades, who ensured that I remained resilient in the face of adversity.
Unfortunately, I didn’t get the opportunity to participate in the inter platoon activities and competitions because of the illness.
As the days passed, bidding farewell to newfound friends became bittersweet, with each farewell tinged with the uncertainty of what lay ahead. Yet, as I boarded the bus bound for Abuja, I was filled with a sense of determination to make the most of the journey that lay ahead.
Upon returning to Abuja, I was greeted by familiar faces and the comforting embrace of old friends from the esteemed University of Benin. With their guidance and support, I navigated the intricacies of my service year, eventually securing a placement at the ECOWAS Commission with advice and assistance from friends, mentors, political and professional guidance. Joining the Department for Political Affairs, Peace, and Regional Security (PAPS), I embarked on a journey of growth and learning that would shape my professional trajectory for years to come.
Throughout my service year, I seized every opportunity for growth and development. From obtaining certifications to building meaningful relationships and receiving mentorship from seasoned professionals, each experience contributed to my personal and professional growth.
As I reflect on the journey that has led me to this moment, I am filled with gratitude for the lessons learned, the memories cherished, and the friendships forged. Expressing my gratitude to mentors, colleagues, and staff; I acknowledge the individuals who played a significant role in guiding and supporting me throughout the NYSC journey. This includes fellow Corps members, CDS officers, professional mentors, political leaders, and my family members, especially my mum and my inestimable father who remains my valued role model despite His demise in 2020.
As I collect my NYSC certificate on 4th April 2024, I am reminded that this journey was not merely a chapter in my life but a transformative odyssey that has left an indelible mark on my soul. As I step into the next chapter of my life, I carry with me the lessons learned and the bonds forged, a testament to the enduring legacy of service year and camaraderie that defines the NYSC spirit which formed the basis of its formation in in 22 May 1973.
To future Corps members and youth out there, I offer this advice: Embrace every challenge as an opportunity for growth, cherish the friendships you make, and never underestimate the impact you can have on your community. Your NYSC journey is not just a chapter in your life but a transformative odyssey that will shape your future in ways you never imagined. Embrace it with an open heart and a spirit of adventure, and you will emerge stronger, wiser, and ready to make a difference in the world.
Congratulations on completing your NYSC journey. It is evident that despite the challenges faced, you embraced every opportunity for growth and learning.
